Surviving and Thriving

In Chapter 19 "Surviving and Thriving in Today's TV Newsroom", Al Tompkins discusses a bunch of different tips on how to be professional and work as a journalists. He shows many different scenarios you could face and gives on tips on managing their career.

The point Tompkins made that resonated with me the must is under the header "Discover all you can about your viewers and seek to serve them." This point resonated with me most because you want to know about your viewers and do work that will mean something to them. Good journalists impact people's live. It's really about giving a voice to those who don't have the platform and outreach you have and giving back to the community.

Most journalists who make it far and become well known started out by doing stories on what matters to the people and fighting for their communities. If viewers reach out to you and need help on something, you should do it.

When you have these connections with your viewers it just makes a better experience for you all around. This semester I did an interview with Dennis House, whom is one of the greatest and liked anchors in Connecticut history. He made and continues to make connections with locals. It really works and has brought him a long way. He is someone I look up to and someone I would want to be like.

I want my viewers to like me and I want to form connections with them one day.
